Are E-Collars Banned?

In the summer of 2018 various newspapers, magazines and T.V. programs ran stories claiming e-collars were banned, it was untrue “Fake News”.

The government had proposed a ban and DEFRA ran a consultation to gauge people’s feelings on the issue, the Consultation lasted 6 weeks ending in April/2018.  DEFRA received 7334 responses to the consultation over 64% of all the responses received did not want to see the collars banned. No ban was ever introduced. Remote Trainers, Pet fences and bark control collars are still legal to use and buy; they continue to be an excellent remedial training tool which has saved hundreds of thousands of dog’s lives, so many rescue dogs with problems that just couldn’t find a suitable home were finally successfully rehomed following training with the help of our systems.

Until someone has encountered dogs that have issues or strong instinctive predatory drive it can be hard for them to understand how remote trainers can help, working dogs off lead are a good example where the attraction of reward finds itself in competition with natural instinct. The further the distance, the greater the distraction and possibly the greater the handler’s frustration. Dogs can be very aware of tension and stress levels in their handlers as they can easily detect when adrenalin is released. With an e-collar, handlers can remain calm at all times, knowing that the ability to act in an emergency is literally within their grasp and this does help avoid confusion and increase the bond between them. A dog during a chase can reach speeds of up to 30mph – 44ft/Second, offering a reward in that situation is utterly useless. The vibration/tone from an e-collar could be sufficient to regain control, but if not, there is the electrical stimulus to fall back on. No drama, just dog and handler interacting with each other in a composed manner.

Our PACDOG Remote Trainers, Pet Containment Systems and Bark Controllers are designed and manufactured to the highest standards, their dependability and humaneness enhances the lives of dogs and cats.PACDOG e-collars offer a choice of different forms of stimuli; vibration, tone and stimulation. The stimulation is similar to the “Static” you get when you touch a car door or supermarket trolley, all it does is distract the dog from what it is doing such as ignoring your recall, chasing sheep etc. it gets his attention back to you and with lots of praise and attention you can get him to return to you or follow your command, designed to give dogs the freedom they deserve off the lead.

Various studies have been carried out by academic institutions over the years, the serious and prolonged study carried out by Lincoln University (2012), showed no evidence that e-collars cause long-term harm to dog welfare when used appropriately. Defra research (2012) has provided evidence-based empirical results which were quality assured and independently peer reviewed. Consequently, Defra states that:

15.1. “…research showed no evidence that e-collars cause long-term harm to dog             welfare when used appropriately and,

15.2. “A ban on e-collars could not be justified because the research provided no evidence that e-collars pose a significant risk to dog welfare. For a ban to be introduced there would have to be evidence showing they were harmful to the long-term welfare of dogs”.

We would like to thank you, our valued customers for your continued support and from thirty years’ experience dealing with dog owners and their problems, we know that it would be difficult to find a more caring and responsible group of people whose overriding concern as is ours has always been the welfare of dogs and cats.

  1. I have used the collars on several problem dogs that we have taken on over the years. All have after a week on mild stimulus responded so we can walk relaxed, around sheep they are tought to walk at my side . I would never be without this aid. These laws are made by idiots with no idea, thank god it was not passed.
